A New World
This week's books, videos, and articles were some of the most inspirational learning I have done so far. Especially Dreamers, by Yuyi Morales. This story is about a mother and daughter who venture into America on foot and learn a new life. From the illustrations to the story line, I feel more empathetic and ready to inform and teach my students the importance of learning other cultures and other people's sacrifices and journeys.
I decided to make an artistic impression inspired by Yuyi Morales' illustrations. Something that stuck with me was the color scheme. Before they discovered the library, pages were dull and gray. After, pages were colorful and full of hope. I tried to incorporate this into my drawing. Something I did not replicate that struck me was the illustrations of the barbed wire around her feet as they journey out of Mexico. Such a simple illustration evokes so much meaning.
Here is my artistic impression. I used inspiration from Dreamers and inspiration from my own I POEM. I am not a professional artist, but after connecting so heavily with the illustrations in the book I felt very inclined to create my own. I took the uncertainty and worries that an immigrant may feel, and turned that into my interpretation of the journey they participated in.
I attached my Persona Poem down below this one. The inspiration I found for this poem also comes from Dreamers by Yuyi Morales. I hope you enjoy my artistic work this week!
I am courageous and curious
I live somewhere new
from the shackles of barbed wire
I wonder what the new will entail
I wonder where I am
I hear new words, new sounds, new people, new life
I see new places, new sound, new people, new life
I want to explore, to learn, to read
I'm as new as my ancestors
I am courageous and curious, new and free
I question what my new life will entail
I feel optimistic of what America brings
I taste new foods, much different from the home I once knew
I worry that one day I will now know my home
I excel at starting anew
I understand that one day I may not know my home
I am courageous and curious
I say that a new beginning is good
I believe that I am capable
I dream of a life full of opportunity, change, and courage
I try to remember the home I once knew
I hope I do
I was once a young, naive being
But now I am courageous and curious
